Ep 143 – Assurnasirpal Has Too Much Energy

This guy is over-the-top, which makes him a dramatic and interesting character. However, he is also flaying people alive, mutilating whole towns, and throwing people into bonfires, which makes him actually horrifying. If he were alive right now, he would be outdoing all but the most depraved of warlords. There is something within most men that, at a distance, is attracted and amazed by the action, the power, the narcissism, the violence, yet like a moth circling a flame most of us know how extreme the consequences would be if that flame were near to us in reality. And so I am left genuinely uncertain; do I play up the violence because people are genuinely fascinated by it and this is an entertainment show as much as an educational one? Do I hastily skip over the violence to avoid glamorizing it? Do I ponderously over-emphasize the pain to bring forward the victims? Too much judgement seems inappropriate and pointless, he has already earned his place in history and there is nothing at all I can accomplish to stop his reign of terror these 2800 years later. On the other hand, too little judgment seems like something of a moral failing on my part. I have a half formed script pondering this over on Christ and Questions, for those interested
